Weekend Art: go big
Before I had children, I would not have described myself as artistic or creative. But, once I had children, I knew that I wanted them to have art in my children’s lives. And once I started doing art with my children, it was fun and, hands down, the easiest way to keep them busy and happy.
I started with more of a craft and product-based approach to art. This is what we are going to make and this is how we will make it.
But the more we did art and the more I learnt about art with children, the easier it became for me to be process-based and let my children explore the materials and see what they wanted to create. And it was amazing to see how inventive and imaginative they were.
And the more process-based art we did, the more I started to join in. I couldn’t help my children have an experience with clay, without ever having played with clay myself. I discovered that I could make art and I wanted to make art.
Here is a little exploration into some art I have done alongside my children where we challenged ourselves to go big.
We painted a canvas to decorate our house
We made this canvas at the end of last year. It was mostly made by my youngest son and I. Sometimes, not everyone wants to make art. We printed leaves from our garden onto the canvas. It still seems unfinished to me, I am contemplating it to decide if I will add more.
We painted a door
This project was my husband’s idea. We did this years ago, with my eldest son. His bedroom door is still like this. We had nothing to lose as the house was newly built and the doors were not painted, so if we hated it, it was easy to paint over. But I love it.
We have also painted a wheelbarrow to use for our herb garden
This junk collage from Super Amazing Mum is the inspiration for our next big project. But it requires a lot of collecting to make a collage like this on a big scale.
I challenge you to make some big art with your family this weekend.
